Jaewon Ryu, MD, JD

 

 

Jaewon Ryu, MD, JD, is the chief executive officer of Risant Health.

An emergency physician by training, Dr. Ryu has spent his career at the intersection of health care delivery and finance, focusing on ways to improve the quality, affordability, and experience of care.

Prior to joining Risant Health, Dr. Ryu served as the president and chief executive officer at Geisinger for 5 years, after joining the organization in 2016 as the executive vice president and chief medical officer. During his tenure, Dr. Ryu cultivated greater integration across the organization’s payer and provider functions, and further advanced Geisinger’s legacy of promoting the health of the community through innovation and transformation. 

Previously, Dr. Ryu was the president of integrated care delivery at Humana. He was responsible for Humana’s owned and joint-ventured care delivery functions, including a management services organization that assisted affiliated practices in adopting population health under value-based reimbursement methodologies.

Prior to that, Dr. Ryu held various leadership roles at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System; the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group; and in government, at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and as a White House Fellow at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Earlier in his career, Dr. Ryu was also a practicing corporate health care attorney. 
 
Dr. Rye has also influenced the health care industry through other activities. He completed a full, 2-year stint from 2018 to 2024, on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, an independent body legislatively tasked with advising Congress on payment and other policies governing health plans and providers. He currently serves on the boards of the Commonwealth Fund, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). He also volunteers his time as a board member and mentor for the Carol Emmott Foundation, an organization focused on the development and advancement of women leaders in health care. 

Dr. Ryu received his BA degree from Yale University and his MD and JD from the University of Chicago, and he completed his residency training in emergency medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
